WARNING! I wish to warn members of the public, especially parents with young children. You are strongly advised to be very careful if you do chose to bring your children to this public park. In the last two days I have on two seperate occasions been the victim of an attack by dogs attempting to bite me. One of the observations from both these occasions, was the attitude of the irresponsible owners who simply acted as if their dogs had the right to attempt to bite members of the public enjoying the park. On Wednesday evening I was walking in the park when I was attacked by a medium size terrier. It snapped at me, and jumped up at me... and only after shouting out for the owner to identity themselves and call their dog did a gentleman shrugg his shoulders and half heartedly call the dog... the dog did not obey, and as I walked off it rushed me and jumped up at me and attempted to bite me... At this stage i decided I had to take a more aggressive stance, since a couple more dogs had started showing interest... so I shouted and threw my wollen beanie at the dog, and chased it away. I was angry that the owner acted as if I had provoked his dog by simply walking through the park. Little did I know that the owner of that dog was representative of more of the dog owners who walk their dogs in this park. This evening I was walking in the park near the fountain when two large aggressive black dogs rushed at me from the fence line where their owner was standing. They attempted to attack me, and I had to defend myself with a shopping bag... I managed to chase them off before I made my way to where the owner was standing with a group of other dog walkers. This group acted like I had provoked their dog by walking in the park minding my own business about 75 metres away from them. One of the group made some comment about the dogs only trying to defend themselves. I am amazed at how these people thought that a single unarmed member of the public walking along a public path 75 metres away from them was in any way a threat to them that justified an attack by two viscous and out of control dogs. May I again state that I am a dog owner, with a very happy and well looked after terrier bitch who has never even jumped up at a stranger, let alone try and bite them. I recently read that there had been some attacks on dogs recently in De Waal Park? I dont believe anyone can justify an unprovoked act of cruelty or violence towards and animal. Having said this, I only feel safe walking through De Waal park armed with a can of pepper spray, and a leather whip to defend myself against another attack by out of control dogs. One of the owners of the viscous dogs mentioned that it was a 'dog park', and having now read the Cape Town bylaws regarding this public space, i can find no reference to this space being an area dedicated solely to animals at the exclusion of it being a public site for the enjoyment by all Cape Townians including their animals.
